What Does the Color of My Exhaust Smoke Mean?

When it is cold outside, you expect to see some exhaust smoke coming from your tailpipe. But during the summer months, it is not something you want to see when you start up your car. And even during the winter, there are some colors of exhaust smoke that could spell trouble.  If you are concerned about the exhaust smoke coming from your car, call Padron Automotive and schedule an appointment with our experts. In the meantime, you can use this smoke color guide to get a better idea of what you are dealing with.

Black Exhaust Smoke

Thick black clouds of smoke spilling from your car look incredibly daunting. When you see black exhaust smoke it is a sign that your car is using too much fuel to make your engine perform as it should. You will probably also notice a decrease in fuel efficiency during this time.

The most common cause of this problem is a clogged air filter. Your air filter helps your car maintain a proper fuel to air ratio which is needed for proper engine function. When it is blocked your engine gets too little air and too much gasoline. Prolonged exposure to this can cause more extensive engine damage, so you should have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible.

White Exhaust Smoke

The most common cause for white exhaust smoke is coolant leaking into the combustion chamber or the cylinders and being burned by the engine. This also puts your engine at risk for overheating and should not be ignored. Prevent further damage by giving Padron Automotive a call.

Blue Exhaust Smoke

When oil leaks into your engine and burns there it causes blue smoke. If your oil is leaking it can’t properly lubricate your engine and all of its components which will increase the rate of wear and tear and lead to possible engine repair or replacement. If you notice blue smoke, be sure to get your vehicle to the shop before the damage is able to progress further.

Anytime you suspect your vehicle is having an issue, we believe it is better to be safe than sorry and always recommend that you bring your car in for an inspection, even if it is just to put your mind at ease.
